Regular highlight on Kalonology's best skincare ingredients - 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
Although Squalene and Squalane are chemically related, Squalene is unstable for use in the cosmetic industry - and is derived from Shark liver!
Thank goodness Science has allowed us to unlock the benefits of Squalene from alternative, sustainable plant based sources.
Squalane is sustainable and stable - don't confuse the two. Squalane oil is one of the most interesting and effective ingredients in the fight against dry skin.
Squalane is often considered a plant based oil but it displays a number of unique benefits when compared to many 'legacy' plant and mineral oils:
-
Works like skin’s own oil to prevent moisture loss and restore suppleness
-
Helps neutralise damage caused by UV light
-
Helps protect against lipid peroxidation which can damage pores
-
Feels lightweight and non-greasy
-
Can be sustainably sourced from plants when used in skin care (vegan)
-
Is unlikely to irritate skin or trigger an allergic reaction
What exactly is Squalane Oil?: Squalane oil is an emollient, an ingredient which displays similar traits to the skin’s own sebum to prevent moisture loss.
Chemically, it’s a hydrocarbon, a group of ingredients made of only hydrogen and carbon.
Common skin-friendly hydrocarbons for skin include petrolatum and mineral oil. Our Squalane (and Jojoba Oil which also emulates skin sebum ) is 100% plant sourced, so it’s a great alternative to petrochemical based ingredients.
They are unique in that they exist as key components within human sebum naturally and thus the skin (as an organ) instantly recognises them and distributes them accordingly.
Squalane naturally occures in olive, wheat bran, rice bran, and amaranth oils. Kalōnology uses 100% vegan Squalane from the Olive Fruit.
Benefits for the skin:
Along with its moisturising ability, Squalane benefits also include being an oil-soluble antioxidant. It works with other antioxidants in skin to neutralise damaging oxygen molecules generated when skin is exposed to UV light.
Squalane also helps to protect skin’s oil from what’s known as lipid peroxidation, a process that damages skin’s surface and deeper into the pore lining where oil originates.
Peroxidation is also believed to play a role in acne, as it can change the skin’s oil composition and has a tendency to become inflammatory. Squalane’s sebum like ability lubricates the skin, making it feel comfortable - but unlike too much sebum, its lightweight consistency keeps it from feeling greasy.
Here are ten additional benefits of plant-derived squalane:
-
Hydrates and Moisturises: Plant-derived squalane is a lightweight oil that penetrates the skin quickly and deeply, providing intense hydration and moisturisation.
-
Non-Comedogenic: Unlike some other oils, plant-derived squalane is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores or cause breakouts.
-
Anti-Aging: Plant-derived squalane is known for its anti-aging properties, as it helps to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
-
Softens Skin: Plant-derived squalane helps to soften and smooth the skin, leaving it feeling supple and silky.
-
Protects Skin: Plant-derived squalane helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors, such as pollution and UV rays.
-
Improves Skin Elasticity: Plant-derived squalane helps to improve skin elasticity, making it look firmer and more youthful.
-
Reduces Inflammation: Plant-derived squalane has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe irritated or inflamed skin.
-
Absorbs Quickly: Plant-derived squalane is easily absorbed by the skin, leaving no greasy or oily residue.
-
Suitable for All Skin Types: Plant-derived squalane is gentle and non-irritating, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.
-
Sustainable: Plant-derived squalane is an eco-friendly alternative to squalane derived from shark liver oil, which is not sustainable and can harm marine ecosystems.
Scientific evidence of effectiveness:
There is a growing body of scientific research that supports the effectiveness of plant-derived squalane in skincare.
A 2018 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that squalane was able to improve skin hydration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a group of 30 female participants.
Another study published in the same journal in 2019 found that squalane was effective in reducing inflammation and improving skin barrier function in a group of 20 male participants.
Additionally, a 2020 review article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology highlighted the multiple benefits of squalane for skincare, including its ability to hydrate, soften, and protect the skin.
Overall, these studies suggest that plant-derived squalane is a valuable ingredient in skincare that can provide a range of benefits for the skin. It’s recognised by other lipids present in skin where it works to visibly repair the skin’s vital barrier, helping skin look younger and is less reactive.
Kalōnology's Advanced Skin Recovery has optimum levels of 100% Plant-Derived Squalane included so as to take advantage of this active ingredient's amazing benefits - especially useful after skin exposure in harsh environments (hot and cold) and UV A & B rays.
This unique serum is specifically formulated to repair and restore damaged skin. It contains a powerful combination of Perfluorodecalin and Perfluorohexane, which are liquid oxygen compounds, along with Vitamin C and E oils at a concentration of 3%.
This serum's liquid oxygen formulation is heavier than water and penetrates the skin's epidermis quickly. This process delivers oxygen and neutralises carbon dioxide, optimising skin metabolism and speeding up skin renewal from deep within the dermis layers. This results in a more youthful and radiant appearance.
In addition, Kalōnology's Advanced Skin Recovery Serum is rich in Palmitoleic Acid extracted from Nannochloropsis Algae. This ingredient delivers optimum levels of Omega 3 and 7 to protect against oxidative stress on DNA and repair cell membranes damaged by environmental and other aging factors.
The formula also includes Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant extracted from Haematococcus Algae. Astaxanthin is 65 times more potent than Ascorbic Acid, 800 times more efficient than Co-Q10 in recycling Vitamin C, and 550 times more powerful than Green Tea extracts. The formula also contains 2% Vitamin C esters.
When used alone, Kalōnology's liquid oxygen formulation instantly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by 15%. However, when combined with other products in the Pro-Age Marine range, this serum's effectiveness grows to 32% after 30 days, and after 90 days, a 57% improvement is observed.
Kalōnology's Advanced Skin Recovery Serum is a powerful addition to any skincare routine, helping to repair and restore damaged skin while providing a youthful and radiant appearance.
